The Sportsman Inn’s location at the foot of the South Downs, yet perched above the flood plains of the River Arun, make it a truly unique place to visit. Amberley itself, known locally as the ‘Pearl of Sussex’, is a beautiful chocolate box village, with thatched stone cottages, a friendly village store and one of the finest medieval castles in England. There are plenty of local attractions for all tastes and ages, here are just a few.

South Downs Way

Amberley is within the South Downs National Park www.southdownsonline.org , a stunning, unspoilt area of England with chalk downland, wild grass fields and ancient wooded valleys. There are over 2000 miles of easily accessible trails to enjoy by foot, bike or on horseback.


Amberley Wild Brooks

Amberley Wild Brooks is an 800 acre wetland Site of Special Scientific Interest in the flood plain of the River Arun. TheNature reserve is managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Over half of all the British species of aquatic plants can be found, as well as many rare invertebrates and breeding and wintering wildfowl. You can enjoy uninterrupted views from The Sportsman Inn, or for the more energetic there are several walks for you to try.

Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre

Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre is a 36 acre open air museum, dedicated to the industrial heritage of South East England ,and with a special interest in natural history, communications and transport. The museum is sited in a former chalk quarry which was also the setting for theJames Bond film A View to a Kill. The museum runs regular events, such as the annual beer festival, Christmas markets and vintage cat fayre.

 


Goodwood

The Goodwood estate  lies about 15 minutes West of Amberley, making The Sportsman Inn the perfect base from which to attend any of their large scale events throughout the year. These include The Goodwood Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival and of course the Goodwood horse racing meets.

 


Bignor Roman Villa

The Bignor Roman Villa http://www.bignorromanvilla.co.uk/ is located in Amberley’s neighbouring village, Bignor, and is one of the finest examples of a Roman courtyard Villa in the country. Preserved under glass, you can see mosaics and other ancient artefacts from the era. For those interested in Roman Britain there are several other Roman buildings and visitor attractions within a very short distance, including the The Roman Palace of Fishbourne, in nearby Chichester (a 15 minute drive away approx).


Arundel

The medieval market town of Arundel www.arundel.org.uk/ is famed for its stunning castle and architecture. It’s a short 5 minute drive from Amberley and well worth a visit.

Xbox One and PS4 In The Pub

Today we did some super cool renovations to the building that we think you would all like to hear about – firstly we fixed up our kitchen that was in desperate need for some tender love and care (TLC for those that don’t know). We also implemented a little bonus into all of our rooms that are available for people to stay in, Playstation 4 consoles (PS4) and Xbox One consoles too. All of which are completely free for you all to use when you stay at the pub if you pay an initial deposit upon arrival to cover any potential damages caused to the property. http://www.jail-breaks.com

So if you are a keen gamer and are interested in playing our long list of titles then go ahead and sign on up to our pub rooms and we will have you staying here in luxury, eating all of the best food and playing all of the latest video games on the PS4 and Xbox One too. Also, we have provided everyone with some guides on how to get free PSN codes with our own free PSN code generator too – this is exclusive for guests only and we will not be providing this information to anybody else – even if you simply come to visit the sportsman inn pub.

Brewed locally, and always served to perfection, our selection includes traditional favorites as well as regularly changing guest ales from across Sussex and the South East. We use Harveys of Lewes, East Sussex, Langhams, Downlands and Baldy Brewery all in West Sussex and Shepherd Neame of Kent (not quite local but they brew a great cask).

ATTRACTIONS

The sportsman is located on the fringe of Amberley Known as “the pearl of the south downs” whose many thatched cottages and pretty gardens lend immense charm whilst its antiquity is highlighted by its Norman church and castle.

The Amberley wildbrooks  and the river Arun are a must for birdwatchers, whose stay can be enhanced by a trip to the RSPB’s important site at Pulborough or the Wild life and Wetlands Trust at Arundel.

Parham house, an Elizabethan masterpiece, set

in it own highly prized gardens and deer park is

located within two miles.

Amberley working museum is situated  by the

mainline railway station (a short walk)
The roman villa at Bignor has extensive remains

of original buildings and mosaics (four miles).

Arundel with it s famous castle and boasting a myriad of little antique shops and markets and for those  that enjoy trout fishing  there’s Chalk spring fisheries.

Horse Racing at Fontwell ( eight miles) and of  course Goodwood (twelve miles), which also has motor racing and classic car events.

Historic town of  Chichester (14 miles) offering fabulous shopping opportunities, a magnificent Cathedral and the celebrated Festival Theatre,

We are proud to have been awarded CAMRA country pub of the year 2009 and Pub of the year 2010 for the Arun and Adur area.

Having three bar areas and a conservatory restaurant, boasting of one of the best views in sussex of the Amberley wild brooks, and seating outside on the deck or in the gardens. Food is served through out.

Real Ales are predominantly from local breweries such as Harvey’s (Lewes), Dark Star (Partridge Green) and Langhams (Lodsworth nr Petworth).

The sportsman has printed menu containing Traditional pub meals meals ,light bites, panini’s and ciabbattas backed up with various delights from the special boards. All produce is locally sourced.

In addition to the pub The Sportsman has five guest rooms, three double and two twins, all en suite with shower and toilets offering comfortable accommodation  and a Hearty English or continental breakfast. Ideal for walkers or cyclists follwing the South Downs way or holidaying guests exploring the many delights of the Arun Valley and beyond.
